Affiliate Offer Account Frozen: How to Recover
By Rey Pasinli, Payments Engineer · 6 min read · LinkedIn
The short version
Affiliate account freezes usually trace to one source, one aggressive campaign, or a rebill wave. Get the reason in writing, establish whether you were reported to MATCH, and expect up to 180 days on settled funds. Recovery means identifying the source, removing it, documenting the removal, and disclosing the history when you reapply.
Why did my affiliate account get frozen?
Most often one of three things: a chargeback ratio crossing threshold, a compliance review triggered by an affiliate running claims you never approved, or a rebill wave from a campaign that converted well and retained badly. In almost every case the cause is traceable to a small number of sources.
What do I do in the first 48 hours?
Get the reason in writing, then find out whether you have been reported to MATCH and under which code. Those two facts shape your next placement more than anything else you do this week.
Then find the source. Pull chargebacks by affiliate for the preceding 90 days. In most freezes the pattern is obvious once anyone actually looks, and being able to say "it was these two affiliates, here is when we removed them" changes the conversation with both your current acquirer and your next one.
How long are funds held?
Up to 180 days on settled funds is standard, matching the window in which cardholders can still dispute a transaction. Where affiliate accounts differ is that the held batch often contains the very traffic that caused the problem, so expect the acquirer to be cautious. Demonstrating that you have cut the source helps.
What about commissions I owe affiliates?
This is the awkward part. Your affiliates expect payment for traffic that may be sitting in a held balance, and some of them will have their own obligations. Communicate early and honestly about timing, because affiliates who feel misled talk publicly, and a public dispute with your own partners is visible to the next acquirer reviewing you.
Where the freeze was caused by specific affiliates, you may have a genuine commercial argument about clawback. Take that carefully, in writing, and separately from your conversation with the bank.
How do I keep selling while this is resolved?
Through a secondary account if you have one, which is the argument for arranging one before you need it. What you should avoid is quietly routing the same traffic through a different entity without disclosing it, because that pattern is well known to acquirers and turns a recoverable freeze into a MATCH listing.
Pausing the affiliate sources implicated in the freeze is also worth doing immediately, even before you know the outcome. Continuing to run traffic that caused a problem while asking for the problem to be forgiven does not go well.
How do I get placed again?
Disclose the history, name the cause, and show what changed. Specialist acquirers board previously terminated affiliate merchants regularly, but they will ask what you have done differently, and "we are more careful now" is not an answer. Per-affiliate dispute reporting and a documented removal are.
Then build redundancy so a single source cannot take your whole operation offline again. That structural work is the substance of stopping payment processing problems.
